Audiodo and Astell&Kern Integrate Personal Sound Technology into High-Fidelity Portable Audio

Audiodo, the Swedish pioneer in personalized sound technology, has announced a strategic expansion into the high-end portable audio market through a new collaboration with Astell&Kern. This partnership marks the integration of Audiodo’s comprehensive audio enhancement suite into the newly unveiled Astell&Kern PD20 digital audio player (DAP).

The PD20 stands as the first reference-grade digital audio player to incorporate a built-in hearing test, allowing for a sound signature tailored specifically to the user’s physiological hearing profile. The device is scheduled for a late March 2026 release, with a retail price of $1,970 / £1,799 / €1,999.

High-Fidelity Engineering Meets Personalization:

While hearing-based calibration has gained traction in the mass consumer market (notably in TWS earbuds), its introduction into the audiophile segment presents unique technical hurdles. High-resolution playback requires absolute signal transparency, meaning any digital processing must be implemented without introducing distortion or coloring the original recording’s intent.

To address this, Audiodo’s engineers worked with Astell&Kern to embed their software directly into the PD20’s hardware architecture. This deep integration ensures that the personalization layers operate in harmony with the player’s ESS ES9027PRO Quad-DAC configuration and Triple AMP system (Class A, AB, and Hybrid modes), maintaining the bit-perfect integrity and high dynamic range expected by high-fidelity listeners.

The Audiodo Enhancement Suite in the PD20:

The PD20 features a four-pillar approach to audio enhancement:

  • Personal Sound: Utilizing a clinical-grade hearing test, this technology creates a bespoke compensation curve for each ear. By independent adjustment of the left and right channels, it restores frequency balance and detail that the listener might otherwise miss due to natural hearing variations.
  • Audiosphere: A spatial audio solution that expands traditional two-channel stereo into a three-dimensional sound field. It offers four distinct presets, Subtle, Balanced, Immersive, and Echoic that is allowing users to tailor the soundstage depth to their environment.
  • Acura: A refined tuning algorithm designed to optimize the performance of the connected output device, ensuring that the signal delivery remains consistent across various high-impedance headphones.
  • Sound Master Wheel: A physical 160-step hardware EQ control that allows for real-time, granular adjustments of bass, mids, and treble from –8.0 dB to +8.0 dB.

Strategic Market Shift:

For Astell&Kern, the PD20 represents a “sound lab” approach to portable audio, moving beyond the static reproduction of music toward an interactive, individualized experience. Jay Ahn, Product Manager at Astell&Kern, noted that the goal was to implement personalization in a way that “complements the audio architecture” rather than acting as a standard software filter.

For Audiodo, the partnership validates the scalability of their Swedish-developed algorithms. By moving into the $1,000+ hardware category, the company aims to prove that digital personalization is a value-add for even the most demanding reference-grade systems.
