The design concept behind the Disc is immediately clear: a square 68 x 68mm aluminum body housing a round 1.8-inch touchscreen is a direct visual reference to the portable CD player format, complete with a spinning disc graphic that animates during playback in the same spirit that the Echo Mini displayed a rotating cassette. Design & Build Quality:

The Disc is a truly distinctive object to hold. Where nearly every DAP on the market is a rounded rectangle of some description, the Disc combines a square 68 by 68 by 12.9mm body machined from aluminum alloy with a silky anodized finish, beveled at the edges, and filled on one face by a fully laminated round touchscreen and on the other by a brushed aluminum plate. The weight sits at 77.2 grams, which is enough to communicate metal construction without feeling heavy in a shirt or jeans pocket, and the rounded edge geometry makes the device comfortable to hold in one hand during operation in a way that a sharp-cornered rectangle is not.

The touchscreen is 1.8 inches in diameter at a 360 by 360 pixel resolution with full lamination, meaning no air gap between the display glass and the IPS LCD panel beneath it. Colors are punchy and album art renders crisply on the round canvas, and the spinning disc animation that plays during music playback is one of the more successful attempts at a retro visual gimmick in the category: it stays out of the way of the album art display rather than competing with it, and the rotational speed tracks roughly to the playback position in a way that is pleasing rather than distracting.

Build quality on the review unit was excellent throughout. The aluminum body shows no visible seams between the top plate and the frame, the physical buttons click crisply and sit flush with the body when not in use, and the 3.5mm and 4.4mm jacks insert and remove with a firm, consistent feel. Both outputs are labeled on the chassis rather than relying on color coding alone, which is a small detail that pays dividends the first time a balanced cable is connected in the dark.

Powering the Disc is a built in 1450mAh rechargeable battery carefully calibrated to balance compact physical dimensions with practical daily endurance. In real world usage scenarios, estimated runtime varies depending on operational parameters. When utilizing the 4.4mm balanced output with more demanding loads, listeners can typically expect approximately 9 to 10 hours of playback. The interface is organized around a home screen that shows the current playing track alongside the spinning disc animation, a swipe-down notification shade for quick access to common settings, and a swipe-up drawer for the full settings menu.

Navigation through a music library is handled by a file browser and an automatically generated tag-based library organized by artist, album, genre, and playlist. The Ingenic X2000 processor scans 5,000 tracks in approximately 30 seconds on a fast microSD card, which is competitive with DAPs at considerably higher price points and substantially faster than the Echo Mini. The library stays current between sessions without requiring a full rescan unless files are added or removed from the card.

One practical limitation worth setting expectations around clearly: the Disc does not support streaming applications, Spotify, Apple Music, or any third-party app, because it does not run Android and has no app store. Drivability & Pairing:

The Disc’s 280mW balanced output and 125mW single-ended output give it considerably more drive capability than a typical smartphone audio section, and all four transducers used for this review reached comfortable to loud listening levels without the output running out of headroom. The balance between the two outputs is the more interesting operational question: the 4.4mm balanced output’s 280mW ceiling provides a meaningful margin over the 3.5mm output’s 125mW on harder to drive loads, and the difference was most audible on the FiiO FT5’s 90mm planar driver, where switching from single-ended to balanced at the same volume step produced a noticeably more dynamic and better-controlled presentation.

The Noble Audio Knight and FiiO FH11 both sat comfortably within the Disc’s single-ended output’s capability without the balanced output being strictly necessary for volume, though the balanced connection’s lower noise floor and improved channel separation were still audible even at a single digit volume step. The FiiO FP3, a planar IEM at 32 ohms and 110dB sensitivity, was among the easiest loads tested and reached very high listening levels in the low teens on the volume control, leaving substantial headroom in reserve. The CS43131 DAC’s amplification stage showed no audible strain or compression on any of the four transducers at listening volumes that covered the full range from casual background listening to deliberate critical sessions.

Across all four transducers used for this review, from the sensitive and analytically revealing Noble Audio Knight through to the 90mm planar driver of the FiiO FT5, the Disc maintained a consistent and coherent sonic identity rather than changing character significantly between easy and more demanding loads. The presentation is musical without being colored, and it will suit listeners who want a long-session-friendly player over one that wears its technical precision on its sleeve.

 

Bass:

Bass from the Disc is full and controlled without veering toward the pronounced warmth that some CS43131-based devices deliver when the implementation prioritizes low-end weight over accuracy. Kick drums and bass lines come through with real physical presence, and the sub-bass extension is adequate rather than deep by the standards of higher-powered DAPs, which suits a player at this price and output class rather than suggesting anything is missing. On the Noble Audio Knight’s dynamic bass driver, the Disc’s low end output delivered satisfying impact on bass-heavy material while maintaining note-to-note separation on faster passages, avoiding the blur that a less controlled output stage can introduce in this frequency region.

The FiiO FH11’s hybrid driver array, which uses a dynamic driver for bass duty, was a particularly complementary pairing for the Disc’s low end delivery: the FH11’s own bass character is forward and punchy, and the Disc’s output maintained that punch without artificially amplifying it into excess. Switching to the 4.4mm balanced output on the FH11 tightened the bass presentation fractionally and improved sub-bass definition on demanding electronic material, confirming that the balanced output’s lower noise floor contributes meaningfully even on IEMs well within the single-ended output’s capability.

On the FiiO FT5, the 280mW balanced output was the clearly preferred connection for bass control. The 90mm planar driver’s bass response depends more on drive quality than on raw volume, and the balanced output’s additional current delivery kept the FT5’s bass warm and full while preventing the slight looseness that can appear on planar headphone bass sections when the amplifier stage is running closer to its ceiling. The FiiO FP3’s planar IEM bass, which is already well-controlled by the driver’s own design, added a touch of Disc-sourced warmth that made electronic bass lines and acoustic bass instruments more engaging without compromising the separation between them.

 

Midrange:

The midrange is where the Disc’s CS43131-based character is most immediately and consistently audible. Vocals on both male and female registers carry a smooth, rounded quality that favors long listening sessions over the kind of clinical immediacy that a more analytically voiced DAC might produce, and the presentation stays consistently fatigue-free across material that sits from gently mixed acoustic recordings through to more aggressively mastered modern productions. Male vocals carry natural body and warmth, landing in an emotionally engaging rather than forensically accurate register, and female vocals are clear and present without the upper-midrange push that can make brighter DAPs feel tiring on extended sessions.

On the Noble Audio Knight, whose own midrange tuning already leans toward smoothness and body, the Disc’s character produced a particularly cohesive combination where the two warm characters stacked together without crossing into muddiness, staying musical and inviting while retaining enough separation between closely layered instruments to track individual lines in complex mixes. The FiiO FH11’s midrange, which sits forward and articulate in its own native tuning, benefited from the Disc’s smoothing effect in a slightly different way: the combination took some of the FH11’s upper-midrange edge away, which will suit listeners who find the FH11 occasionally forward through brighter sources but may feel like a slight mellowing for listeners who specifically prize the FH11’s natural clarity.

Instrument timbre across acoustic guitar, piano, and orchestral strings was consistently natural and well-reproduced, with no obvious signs of phase mismatch between the two CS43131 channels or any coloration introduced by the balanced amplification stage that changed the fundamental character of an instrument away from its recognizable tonal identity. The Disc is not a DAP that adds warmth as an audible trick layered on top of the source material; the warmth here emerges from the DAC architecture’s inherent character rather than from any deliberate boost or filter.

 

Treble:

Treble through the Disc is smooth and comfortably extended without reaching for the forward, sparkle-oriented character of some competing DAPs built around ESS DAC chips. Cymbal decay and string harmonics are present and clearly rendered, carrying enough air to give the presentation a sense of openness without the sharpness that can make bright recordings difficult to listen to over time. The CS43131’s THD+N figure of less than 0.0003 percent keeps the treble region clean and distortion-free at all listening levels tested for this review, which is a more meaningful contributor to long-session comfort than the absolute treble extension figure alone.

On the FiiO FT5, the Disc’s treble character complemented the over-ear planar headphone’s own smooth top end particularly well, producing a combined presentation that was easy, open, and detail-sufficient without ever becoming fatiguing on extended sessions with energetic treble content. The FP3’s planar IEM top end, which has a slightly brighter character than the FT5, stayed well within comfortable territory through the Disc, confirming that the CS43131’s treble character is smooth enough to tame already-bright transducers without softening them to the point where detail is lost.

Listeners specifically chasing the maximum treble extension or the sharpest transient leading edge will find the Disc warmer and softer in the top end than an ESS Sabre-based DAP of similar price. That is an accurate description of the character trade rather than a flaw: the Disc is built around a musical, fatigue-free presentation, and the CS43131’s treble behavior is an integral part of delivering that character rather than a compromise made to reach the price point.

 

Soundstage and Imaging:

Soundstage width from the Disc is above average for a DAP at this price, with a genuine sense of instruments placed outside the head rather than the more compressed, inside-the-head presentation that lower-tier devices and smartphone outputs tend to produce. Depth is a stronger point than width, with a convincing sense of front-to-back layering that keeps lead instruments and vocals separated from the supporting layers behind them rather than compressing everything into a single horizontal plane. On the Noble Audio Knight, which already excels at staging, the Disc’s output produced a presentation that felt larger and more convincingly spaced than either the Knight’s stock cable connected to a phone output or to a lower-power dongle DAC.

Imaging precision on the Disc is good rather than exceptional by the standards of higher-end DAPs, with stable instrument placement across a clean stereo field and a center image that held its position reliably across dynamic changes. The CS43131’s dual-mono implementation with independent per-channel processing contributes to left-right consistency, and no channel imbalance or drift was observed across any of the four transducers during this review. The FiiO FT5’s over-ear presentation added the widest perceived stage of the four pairings tested, making it the most dramatic demonstration of the Disc’s staging capability even though the IEM pairings generally showed tighter and more precisely defined imaging.

 

Comparison:

In the bass, the AP80 Pro MAX’s ES9219C-based output produces a tighter, more analytically controlled low end than the Disc’s CS43131, with faster transient response and a slightly leaner midbass presentation that suits listeners chasing technical precision over physical weight. The Disc’s bass carries more warmth and perceived fullness on kick drums and bass lines, which will suit listeners who find the AP80 Pro MAX’s low end slightly dry or restrained on material they want to feel as well as hear. The AP80 Pro MAX’s higher output power, particularly the 190mW balanced ceiling against the Disc’s 280mW balanced ceiling, actually favors the Disc in absolute output, which is a meaningful reversal given the price difference.

The midrange is the clearest point of character separation between the two DAPs. The AP80 Pro MAX’s ESS DAC delivers a more neutral, forward, and analytically detailed midrange where vocal consonants and instrument transients are communicated with immediate clarity, while the Disc’s CS43131 midrange rounds those same edges into a smoother, more inviting delivery that trades some of that immediacy for a fatigue-free quality that holds up better over multi-hour sessions. Neither presentation is more correct than the other, but they serve clearly different listener priorities: the AP80 Pro MAX for analytical critical listening and the Disc for relaxed extended listening across a wider range of material and moods.

Treble follows the same pattern. The AP80 Pro MAX’s ESS-based output extends with more outright crispness and sparkle than the Disc’s CS43131, which will be the decisive factor for listeners who specifically prize treble air and detail, while the Disc’s smoother top end will be preferred by listeners with treble sensitivity or by those pairing with already-bright transducers like the FiiO FP3. Soundstage is broadly comparable between the two, with the AP80 Pro MAX producing marginally wider left-right extension and the Disc producing better front-to-back depth, a difference that was most audible on orchestral and acoustic ensemble material rather than on electronic or pop recordings.

The most meaningful non-sonic differences sit in the operating system and feature set. The AP80 Pro MAX’s Android base allows streaming applications, Tidal and Spotify included, to run natively, removing the local library requirement that is the Disc’s most significant practical limitation. The Disc’s custom Linux OS in turn delivers a faster, smoother interface with no background app activity, longer battery life at a given listening level, and a simpler day-to-day operation that does not require managing OS updates or app permissions. The Disc’s unique form factor and SNOWSKY lifestyle branding also put it in a different emotional register from the AP80 Pro MAX’s more conventional DAP presentation. Buyers choosing between the two are essentially choosing between a streaming-capable, analytically tuned Android player and a local-library, musically voiced pure audio player, with the lower price and unique aesthetic sitting firmly with the Disc.

 

Conclusion:

Its limitations are real and specific rather than general: the absence of streaming application support will be a dealbreaker for listeners whose primary music access is through Spotify or Tidal. However, its lightweight custom OS ensures a remarkably smooth and fluid UI performance that makes navigating your music library effortless.
