The AP30 Music Boy is a deliberate departure from all of that. It does not look like any previous Hidizs product, and that is entirely the point. Shaped after the silhouette of a handheld gaming console, complete with a D-pad, action buttons, a 2-inch display, and a built-in retro block puzzle game, the AP30 reaches back to the 1990s for its design language rather than to the world of audiophile DAP aesthetics that defines the rest of the Hidizs lineup.

Beneath the nostalgic shell sits hardware that demands to be taken seriously. A Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC, an RT6863 amplifier stage, dual headphone outputs covering both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced, native DSD256 decoding, and a MagSafe-compatible magnetic case system that lets the AP30 snap directly to the back of a phone as a wearable USB DAC without dangling from a cable. The whale tail motif on the rear panel is a recurring Hidizs design detail, embossed into the back surface rather than printed, which makes it durable against the contact that the rear panel inevitably sees when the AP30 is magnetically docked to a phone.

The front face is dominated by the 2.0-inch IPS display, with the D-pad on the left and two circular action buttons on the right. On the right edge sit a volume rocker (multi-functional wheel), a power button, and a microSD card slot. The bottom edge houses the 3.5mm and 4.4mm headphone jacks along with the USB-C port.

The physical button layout and the edge port arrangement are immediately familiar to anyone who has held a Game Boy or its contemporaries, and the deliberate nature of that reference is the point. The round action buttons and the multi-functional volume wheel are very successful: both deliver a firm, positive, and consistently clicky feel with good travel. The D-pad, however, is a bit firmer than ideal and makes precise navigation slightly more effortful than it needs to be; a softer and more clicky response would have been preferable.

Comparing the Plastic Edition’s build to the CNC Aluminum Alloy Edition is worth doing briefly for buyers weighing the $10 price difference. The aluminum version is heavier at approximately 80 grams and carries a more premium in-hand feel with the cold metal surfaces and tighter tolerances that CNC machining enables. The plastic version’s lighter weight is the more practical choice for everyday portable use. The sound output is identical between the two editions: same DAC, same amplifier stage, same outputs. The choice is entirely one of material preference, durability expectations, and weight tolerance.

The rear surface of the AP30 features the stylized image of a cute blue whale listening to music under a star, paying homage to ocean conservation. This custom artwork highlights Hidizs’ partnership with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) charity. On the premium version, this panel is covered by high-gloss tempered glass. This dual-layer design provides a deep, mirror-like finish and premium protection. The plastic models use semi-transparent shells to recall Y2K nostalgia.

One fit-and-finish detail specific to the plastic edition: the transparent protective case that comes in the box fits cleanly and clicks onto the AP30 body without any flex or gap, and the metal magnetic ring mounts to the back of the case through a center-positioned adhesive that held firmly through the review period without any sign of separation. The case does add approximately 3 to 4 mm of thickness to the AP30, which is worth knowing for listeners who want to keep the player as thin as possible for pocket carry.

 

User Interface & Software:

The AP30 runs HidizsOS, a proprietary Linux-based operating system built specifically for this product rather than adapted from Android or any existing open-source platform. Navigation is handled entirely through the physical D-pad, action buttons, and the power and volume controls, with the touchscreen not present on the 2.0-inch display. The interface is responsive and well-laid-out for a button-first control scheme, with a music library organized by file structure and by automatically generated tags for artist, album, genre, and playlist, a now-playing screen with cover art, and quick-access settings reachable from a side-swipe navigation panel.

Library scanning on a 256 GB microSD card loaded with lossless files took under 40 seconds on the review unit, and the library remained accurate across restarts without requiring a full rescan unless new content was added to the card. The display’s 296 × 240 resolution is sufficient for the interface and for reading album art on the now-playing screen, though the low pixel density makes text at the smallest UI sizes slightly soft. Hidizs’s decision to include a cover art display on an interface that is fundamentally built around physical controls rather than a touchscreen is a nice touch: seeing the correct artwork rotate while navigating through an album contributes to the tactile enjoyment of using the player as a physical object.

Two additional features ship with HidizsOS: an eBook reader for loading plain text files, and a Retro Block Puzzle game, the AP30’s version of the classic falling-block game that requires no explanation. Both features were included specifically to reinforce the Game Boy nostalgia concept the AP30 is built around, and the block puzzle in particular lands as a welcome addition rather than a hollow checkbox. A short break from music to play a few rounds without picking up a phone is a small pleasure that is difficult to explain on a specification sheet but easy to appreciate in practice.

EQ is accessible from the settings menu, offering graphic EQ presets alongside adjustable bands, though a fully parametric EQ with center-frequency and Q-factor control is not available in the current firmware. The EQ operates at the DAC output level rather than as a software filter on the playback app, which keeps the implementation clean, and the digital filter selection allows adjustments to the CS43198’s roll-off behavior. Firmware updates are delivered via the USB-C connection to a computer, a process that is straightforward but requires downloading the update file from Hidizs’s support page rather than receiving it automatically. The proprietary OS makes over-the-air update delivery unavailable.

 

Battery Life:

Hidizs rates the AP30 at 10 to 12 hours of playback through the 3.5mm single-ended output and 8 to 10 hours through the 4.4mm balanced output, both figures based on standard-resolution playback at moderate volume. The 1200 mAh battery charges fully in approximately one hour via USB-C, which is a fast charge cycle relative to the battery capacity and means a lunch-break top-up from flat is a realistic scenario rather than a wishful estimate.

In testing through this review, the rated figures held up well at moderate listening levels on FLAC and high-resolution PCM material, with real-world battery life landing in the 10 to 11 hour range over the 3.5mm output and 8 to 9 hours over the balanced output. At higher listening volumes the figures dropped noticeably, particularly through the balanced output where the higher current draw at elevated volume steps shortened the session to the lower end of the rated range. USB DAC mode draws power from the AP30’s own battery rather than the connected host device, which keeps the host device’s battery intact during long USB DAC sessions but does consume the AP30’s own charge: battery drain in USB DAC mode was faster than local playback in testing, as expected from running the DAC and amplifier stages continuously off the internal battery.

The AP30 can be used while charging, though the combination of USB-C charging and active playback produced a very slight warmth on the plastic chassis around the port area, which is normal but worth noting for listeners who plan to run the player continuously from a power bank on long journeys. Across a full day of commuting, office listening, and an evening session, the battery consistently returned enough residual charge to confirm the AP30 does not need to be a daily charging device for moderate listening volumes.

Drivability & Pairing:

At 61 mW single-ended and 137 mW balanced at 32 ohms, the AP30 covers a specific and well-defined range of IEMs and portable headphones rather than attempting to be an all-source driver. The 61 mW single-ended output is on the modest side for the segment, enough for sensitive IEMs to reach comfortable listening levels without strain but not sufficient for low-sensitivity or high-impedance headphones where impedance peaks can cause frequency response coloration when driven from a low-power source with limited damping factor. For the efficient, low-impedance IEMs that represent the AP30’s primary intended pairing, the output stage is a non-issue in practice.

Both IEMs used for this review fall well within the AP30’s comfortable operating range. The Hidizs MK12 Turris, rated at 32 ohms and 111 dB sensitivity, is one of the easier loads a modern high-end single dynamic driver IEM presents, and the AP30 drove it to comfortable listening levels from the low teens on the volume scale with obvious headroom remaining. The Hidizs MS2 Pro’s 17-ohm impedance and 111 dB sensitivity sit at an even more accessible operating point, and the AP30’s noise floor stayed completely inaudible on the MS2 Pro through both outputs, confirming the CS43198 and RT6863 implementation maintains a clean background against sensitive hybrid IEMs rather than adding hiss or grain to the amplification chain.

Switching from the 3.5mm to the 4.4mm balanced output on both IEMs produced a noticeable improvement in perceived dynamic range and low-end authority, consistent with the doubled output power figure. The balanced output’s 130 dB dynamic range specification over the single-ended output’s 122 dB is audible rather than theoretical on both IEMs, manifesting as more convincing transient impact on the MK12 Turris’s dynamic driver and better-defined low-frequency separation on the MS2 Pro’s 10.2 mm driver. For IEMs at this sensitivity level, the balanced connection is the clearly preferred option whenever the cable supports it.

The Sound:

The CS43198 DAC’s well-established character, which is clean, slightly warm, and detailed rather than forward or analytical, comes through consistently across both IEMs used for this review. The AP30 does not add a heavy-handed coloration to the source material or attempt to compensate for its modest single-ended output power with any deliberate warmth in the tuning. The presentation is honest, staying out of the way of whatever IEM is connected rather than imposing a strong house character on top of it, which is exactly the behavior a dedicated music player at this price should aim for and not always achieve.

Background noise is nonexistent on both IEMs tested, including the 17-ohm MS2 Pro, which presents a challenging load for sources with less-than-excellent output stage design. The complete absence of hiss or floor noise at any listening volume tested is one of the AP30’s clearest technical achievements given its price and its compact, shared-board amplifier implementation.

Bass:

Bass from the AP30 is controlled and honest rather than elevated or colored, and the RT6863 amplifier stage handles the low-frequency demands of both IEMs without the soft, mushy low-end that can appear when an underpowered source is asked to drive an IEM’s bass driver harder than its output stage can cleanly support. On the Hidizs MK12 Turris, whose 12 mm 91% pure magnesium diaphragm is tuned for a V-shaped presentation with a prominent, physical low end, the AP30’s balanced output delivered the kick and sub-bass depth the driver is designed to communicate, with kick drum attacks arriving with satisfying impact and bass guitar lines maintaining clear shape rather than trailing off into a diffuse low-frequency mass.

The single-ended output’s 61 mW ceiling showed its limits on bass-heavy material at higher listening volumes through the MK12 Turris, where the bottom end occasionally sounded slightly less controlled and less precisely textured than through the balanced connection at the same effective loudness. Switching to the 4.4 mm balanced output at the same volume steps restored the tighter, more physically authoritative low end that the CS43198 and RT6863 are capable of producing when given adequate output headroom.

On the MS2 Pro, whose 10.2 mm dynamic driver handles the low end in a bass-forward, fun-leaning signature with a deliberate midbass lift, the AP30 communicated the driver’s warm, rounded low-frequency character clearly through both outputs without adding any of its own coloration on top of it. Sub-bass extension on the MS2 Pro is a function of the IEM’s own tuning rather than a strength the AP30 adds to the chain, and the DAP presented that tuning accurately and without the compression that lower-quality output stages can introduce at the lower frequency extreme.

 

Midrange:

Midrange transparency is where the CS43198’s character is most clearly audible, and on both IEMs the AP30 communicated the full tonal identity of the connected earphone rather than applying any consistent warmth or analytical push of its own. Male vocals on the MK12 Turris, which sits in a slightly relaxed, natural midrange register that avoids the upper-midrange forwardness of strictly Harman-tuned IEMs, came through with natural body and clear articulation, and the AP30’s output stayed clean and uncompressed on complex passages where vocal and instrumental energy overlapped in the same frequency range.

The MS2 Pro’s hybrid midrange, handled by the transition between the 10.2 mm dynamic driver’s upper register and the custom Silvercore balanced armature’s contribution, is where the AP30’s neutral output character contributed most clearly to the listening experience. The crossover integration on the MS2 Pro is one of its technical strengths, and the AP30’s clean amplification stage kept that crossover region coherent rather than adding grain or congestion that would expose the driver handoff as an audible artifact. Female vocals on the MS2 Pro came through with the bright, forward presence that the IEM’s V-shaped tuning is designed to produce, sitting well above the warmer male vocal register in a way that suited pop and electronic material with prominent female lead vocal tracks.

Instrument separation in the midrange held up well on both IEMs at moderate complexity levels, with dense pop arrangements and layered acoustic material staying distinguishable rather than collapsing into a single textured mass. At the highest complexity and loudest listening levels tested, the single-ended output’s headroom limitation reappeared as a very slight compression of midrange dynamics on the MK12 Turris, an effect that disappeared entirely on the balanced connection.

 

Treble:

Treble extension through the AP30 is clean and controlled, with no consistent harshness or grain across either IEM at normal listening levels. The CS43198’s dynamic range figure of 130 dB on the balanced output translates in practice to a treble region with enough headroom to render cymbal decay and high-frequency transients accurately rather than clipping or compressing the upper registers when a recording contains strong energy in those frequencies. The AP30’s treble character is neither sparkle-forward nor rolled-off, sitting in a neutral middle ground that communicates the treble personality of the connected IEM honestly.

On the MK12 Turris, whose tuning nozzle system allows the listener to adjust the treble balance by changing the acoustic filter on the nozzle, the AP30 communicated the differences between the three included nozzle options accurately and without masking the specific tonal adjustments each filter is intended to produce. The balanced nozzle and the vocal nozzle settings in particular showed the AP30’s treble transparency clearly, with the vocal filter’s midrange-forward adjustment and the balanced filter’s more even distribution both reading as distinct and correctly rendered rather than being smoothed over by a DAP that adds its own treble character.

The MS2 Pro’s Silvercore BA driver contributes an energetic, occasionally bright treble to the hybrid’s output, and the AP30 rendered that character accurately without the additional grain or edge that a noisier amplification stage can add when driving a balanced armature at higher volumes. Sibilance on the MS2 Pro appears on recordings that are already forward in that region and the AP30 passes that information through rather than suppressing it, confirming that the DAP is not applying any deliberate high-frequency smoothing to manage sensitivity.

 

Soundstage and Imaging:

Soundstage reproduction through the AP30 is consistent with the CS43198’s reputation for a clean, well-organized presentation rather than an artificially expanded or narrowed spatial image. On the MK12 Turris, which is among the more spatially capable single dynamic driver IEMs in its price bracket, the AP30 produced a stage with adequate width and a convincing sense of depth that suited acoustic and orchestral material well and kept instrument placement stable during busy passages. The 4.4 mm balanced output produced a noticeably wider and more clearly defined stage than the single-ended output on the MK12 Turris, with left and right extremes better defined and center image more precisely anchored, which is among the most audible improvements the balanced connection offered across the review.

Imaging precision on the MS2 Pro through the AP30 was functional rather than exceptional, consistent with the IEM’s own imaging capabilities on a neutral source, with instrument positions reading clearly and without ambiguity across the stereo field. The MS2 Pro’s stage is not its strongest attribute at the price point, and the AP30 communicated that accurately without compensating for the IEM’s more modest spatial performance or reducing it further through any limitation in the DAP’s own channel separation performance.

 

Comparisons:

Hidizs AP30 Music Boy vs. HiBy R1:

The HiBy R1 is one of the most relevant competitors to the AP30 Music Boy in the sub-$130 dedicated DAP space. Both are compact, non-Android, local-library-focused players aimed at listeners who want a distraction-free alternative to smartphone audio. The R1 uses a single Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC, offers only a 3.5 mm single-ended output (approximately 101 mW @ 32 Ω), a larger 3-inch touchscreen, WiFi, and Bluetooth with LDAC/aptX/AAC support, and is priced around $85. On the technical side, the AP30’s dual-output design and balanced 137 mW headroom give it a clear advantage for IEM listeners who prefer balanced cables and want more dynamic authority.
