Design & Build Quality:

The Questyle M15i Special Edition features an industrial design rooted in Bauhaus minimalism. Rather than being purely decorative, its construction is a functional choice aimed at maintaining signal integrity. The chassis is CNC-machined from a single block of aerospace-grade aluminum, providing a dense and durable build. This metal housing serves a dual purpose: it ensures structural strength and acts as a shield to protect the internal circuitry from electromagnetic interference caused by mobile devices.

The dimensions are approximately 61.8 x 27.2 x 12 mm maintaining a sleek profile that defines the ultra portable category. This special edition introduces two evocative colorways where the Electro Purple variant offers a vibrant neon lit energy that catches the light beautifully while the Blues Blue version shows a deep sophisticated matte finish reminiscent of professional audio gear.

The most captivating design element remains the signature transparent Kunlun glass top cover. This window serves as a portal into the soul of the device revealing the precise PCB layout and key signal components including the flagship ESS DAC chip and the patented CMA SiP modules. Every detail in the build speaks to Questyle’s commitment to quality.

The 3.5mm single ended and 4.4mm balanced outputs are perfectly recessed and gold plated to ensure long term durability.

On the left edge you will find a tactile manual hardware gain switch which provides a satisfying mechanical click. This allows the user to switch between low and high power modes instantly without needing to interact with software. However the only significant downside to this otherwise perfect industrial design is the complete absence of physical buttons.

There are no dedicated controls for adjusting the volume or skipping tracks on the device itself. This means you are entirely dependent on your source for all playback navigation and volume increments. While this maintains the clean minimalist aesthetic it can be a slight inconvenience for users who prefer to control their music blindly from their pocket.

On the top of the device is then USB Type-C interface.

Beyond its minimalist aesthetic, the overall craftsmanship remains at the top of its class, characterized by high-precision CNC machining and a structural integrity that ensures long-term durability in a portable format.

Hardware & Software Features:

A) DAC and Physical Tuning:

The device utilizes the flagship ESS ES9281AC chip leveraging the acclaimed HyperStream II architecture. Questyle’s real innovation here is Physical Tuning. Instead of using digital software EQ which can introduce phase distortion Questyle has manually selected internal components like high grade resistors and capacitors to shape the sound character. This ensures that the sonic refinement happens at a hardware level preserving the original resolution while adding specific harmonic textures.

B) Connectivity and MFi Certification:

The “i” designation signifies official Apple MFi Certification ensuring total compatibility with the Apple ecosystem and meeting strict power efficiency standards. It is truly plug and play for Android 5.1 and above along with Windows 10 and macOS.

C) Current Mode Amplification (CMA):

Questyle’s patented CMA SiP modules amplify the signal in the current domain rather than voltage. This results in an incredible 1MHz bandwidth and near zero distortion. This architecture provides the massive current swing required to drive the FOSI i5 planars with authority while maintaining the ultra low noise floor necessary for the Campfire Andromeda 10.

D) Power Consumption and Efficiency:

The M15i incorporates a highly sophisticated TOREX Precision Power Management system which is specifically designed to optimize energy efficiency during portable use. This hardware solution ensures that the device draws a minimal amount of current from the source smartphone while preventing premature battery drainage. During extended listening sessions with my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra I noticed that the M15i remains remarkably cool to the touch even when driving high impedance loads in high gain mode. Additionally the device features a smart detection system that automatically puts the unit into a low power sleep state when no headphone is connected to the output ports which further conserves the host device’s battery life.

The Sound

The Questyle M15i Special Edition serves as a highly capable implementation of the Current Mode Amplification technology within a portable footprint. One of the most technically impressive aspects of the device is its exceptionally low noise floor. When paired with the Campfire Andromeda 10, an IEM recognized for its hyper sensitivity to source hiss, the M15i provides a silent background that remains free of audible floor noise. This high signal to noise ratio allows for the unhindered reproduction of micro details and low level ambient cues. Through the Electro Purple and Blues Blue models, Questyle offers two distinct hardware level tuning profiles that provide different approaches to the frequency spectrum and transient response.

Bass:

The low frequency performance across both models is defined by high damping and absolute control over driver excursion. The Electro Purple edition emphasizes speed and rhythmic accuracy above all else. When utilized with the Oriveti OH700VB, the sub bass is rendered with a tight and disciplined character. The tuning focuses on a fast transient response where the leading edge of a bass note is sharp and the decay is remarkably quick. This approach effectively minimizes acoustic overhang and prevents midbass bleed, resulting in a very clean transition into the lower midrange. It is a presentation that priorities technical accuracy and percussive punch over sheer quantity or warmth.

In contrast, the Blues Blue edition provides a slightly warmer and more textured low end response that feels more analog in its delivery. During testing with the Campfire Supermoon, the fast response of the planar driver was paired with a more substantial midbass body. This tuning captures more of the natural resonance found in acoustic instruments like an upright bass or a kick drum. The decay is marginally longer compared to the Purple model, which adds a sense of organic weight and harmonic richness to the foundation. This results in a fuller sound that feels less analytical and more focused on the physical vibration and timbre of the instruments, making it ideal for acoustic and live recordings.

Midrange:

The midrange reproduction on the M15i series is characterized by high transparency and a lack of the artificial digital dryness often associated with basic ESS implementations. The Electro Purple offers a slightly more forward and energetic midrange. When paired with the Campfire Andromeda 10, it provides a high degree of clarity that brings vocal lines to the front of the mix with great definition. The upper midrange has a touch more presence, which highlights the snap of guitar strings and the air in female vocals. Even when switching to the Oriveti OH700VB, this tuning ensures that the hybrid driver configuration maintains excellent instrument separation in complex or busy tracks where congestion can often occur, allowing the multi driver array of the Andromeda to showcase its resolving power.

The Blues Blue edition shifts the focus toward a more intimate and tonally dense midrange. It introduces a subtle boost in the lower midrange which grants vocals a lifelike weight and a more grounded resonance. When listening with the Campfire Andromeda 10, the transition between the lower and upper mids is tuned to be exceptionally smooth, effectively softening any potential harshness or grain in the recording. On the Oriveti OH700VB, the midrange takes on a more velvety and relaxed character, creating a sense of depth that makes vocal performances feel more centered and substantial. This profile is particularly effective at making poorly mastered recordings more listenable by providing a rich and emotionally engaging presentation over a purely clinical one.

Treble:

Treble management in the M15i series demonstrates a high level of refinement by providing resolution without introducing fatigue. The Electro Purple provides a crisp and well extended treble response with a noticeable amount of sparkle. It offers plenty of air in the highest octaves, which complements the holographic nature of the Campfire Andromeda 10. When used with the Campfire Supermoon, this extra energy in the highs helps to define the edges of the soundstage and provides a sense of openness that counteracts the planar driver’s natural density. Percussive elements like cymbals and high hats are rendered with distinct metallic texture and sharp definition. While the detail retrieval is high, it remains disciplined enough to avoid sibilance on well recorded tracks.

The Blues Blue edition utilizes a more forgiving treble profile that focuses on smoothness. It appears to slightly round off the sharpest peaks in the high frequencies, resulting in a more polished delivery. This characteristic was especially beneficial when driving the Campfire Supermoon for long listening sessions, as the planar driver’s treble can occasionally feel intense with leaner sources. The Blue version manages to retain the core detail of the recording while presenting it in a more relaxed and fluid manner. It focuses on a natural treble decay rather than emphasizing every micro shimmer, making it ideal for the FOSI i5 planar headphones as well. This tuning ensures a fatigue free experience while maintaining a sense of luminous air and high resolution.

Soundstage and Imaging:

The spatial presentation of the M15i Special Edition is organized and well proportioned, benefiting greatly from the dark background and high current output. The Electro Purple provides a wider sense of lateral space. It pushes the boundaries of the soundstage horizontally, creating a vast area where instruments are placed with surgical precision. This wide staging allows the Andromeda 10 to showcase its ability to separate layers within the mix and provides a more out of head experience.

The Blues Blue focuses more on the depth and the layering of the stage. It brings the listener slightly closer to the performance while emphasizing the front to back distance between instruments. This creates a more spherical and three dimensional sense of space where vocals feel like they have a physical presence in the room. Even when driving the large diaphragms of the FOSI i5 or the Campfire Supermoon, the imaging remains stable and coherent across the entire frequency range. The stage remains organized even during high volume passages, providing a sense of depth that makes orchestral and live recordings feel structurally sound and realistic.

Comparison:

Questyle M15i Special Edition vs Audirect Beam 4:

When comparing the sonic performance of the Questyle M15i Special Edition to the Audirect Beam 4, it becomes evident that these two devices utilize the same flagship ESS ES9281AC DAC chip to achieve very different musical objectives. The Audirect Beam 4 focuses on a strictly linear and clinical neutrality, benefiting from its internal battery which provides a highly stable and uncolored power supply to the amplification stage. This results in a sound signature that is lean, fast, and remarkably transparent, yet it can occasionally feel somewhat dry or thin during critical listening sessions. In contrast, the Questyle M15i leverages its patented Current Mode Amplification to provide a more textured and organic presentation that feels closer to a desktop class experience. While the Electro Purple variant matches the Beam 4 in terms of transient speed and crystalline clarity, it manages to avoid the slight digital glare sometimes found in the Audirect implementation.

The differences are most apparent in the low frequency and midrange regions where Questyle’s hardware tuning offers a level of depth that the Beam 4 does not quite reach. In the bass department, the Beam 4 is exceptionally disciplined and tight, providing a fast response that is ideal for analyzing recordings but lacks the visceral weight and midbass bloom found in the Blues Blue edition of the M15i. The M15i provides a more rounded and tactile bass presence that captures the natural resonance of instruments with greater realism and physical impact. Moving into the midrange, the Beam 4 places vocals in a neutral position with sharp definition on the edges of the notes, whereas the M15i focuses on the body and density of the performance. The M15i creates a more liquid and intimate midrange experience that feels emotionally engaging rather than purely technical, offering a more natural sense of tonal weight.

In terms of treble and spatial imaging, the Audirect Beam 4 provides a wide and flat soundstage that emphasizes lateral separation and air, making it a powerful tool for dissecting complex arrangements. However, the M15i Special Edition offers a more holographic and three dimensional stage with superior front to back layering and depth. The Questyle’s ability to maintain a jet black background allows micro details to emerge with a higher sense of contrast and spatial definition. While the Beam 4 can become fatiguing due to its uncompromising treble sparkle and analytical nature, the M15i offers a more refined and polished high frequency extension that retains high resolution without the associated fatigue. Ultimately, the Beam 4 is a champion of pure neutrality and technical precision, while the M15i Special Edition provides a more soulful and tonally rich experience that prioritizes the natural timbre and spatial depth of the music

Conclusion:

The Questyle M15i Special Edition establishes itself as a premier solution for listeners who prioritize a sophisticated, desktop class presentation in a highly portable footprint. It manages to bridge the gap between technical transparency and musical soul through the unique application of Current Mode Amplification and hardware level tuning. By offering two distinct sonic profiles, Questyle allows the user to choose between high energy precision and organic warmth without ever sacrificing the core resolution of the flagship ESS DAC. The result is a device that does not merely decode a signal but renders it with a sense of holographic depth and physical weight.
