Introduction:

HEDD Audio has built its headphone reputation almost entirely on Air Motion Transformer technology. The original HEDDphone, launched in 2020, was the first full-range AMT headphone ever made, and the TWO and TWO GT that followed in 2023 refined that same driver concept into a more ergonomically accessible form without abandoning the fundamental AMT architecture. For a brand defined by one specific, unusual driver technology, the HEDDphone D1 represents a real change in direction: it is HEDD’s first headphone built around a dynamic driver, and it took eight years of in-house development before HEDD was ready to release it.

That development resulted in the world’s first headphone to use a Thin-Ply Carbon Diaphragm, a material co-developed with Composite Sound, a Swedish subsidiary of Oxeon, specialists in carbon fibre structures for aerospace and motorsport applications. Where HEDD’s AMT drivers fold and squeeze air between pleated membranes, the D1’s 50mm TPCD driver operates more like a conventional dynamic transducer, but with a diaphragm so stiff and so light that HEDD claims it eliminates the need for separate damping at the diaphragm level, allowing the driver to control resonances structurally rather than mechanically. The result is a headphone that HEDD positions not as a replacement for its AMT lineup but as an accessible, easier-to-drive companion to it, aimed at a broader audience without requiring the desktop amplification that the AMT models demand.

The D1 ships in a compact, straightforward cardboard box, a noticeably simpler presentation than the larger, more theatrical unboxing of HEDD’s AMT-based models, which reflects both the D1’s broader intended audience and the practical reality that most of the manufacturing cost here went into the driver and chassis rather than into packaging. Inside, the headphone is cushioned securely and the accessories are arranged neatly alongside it.

Design & Build Quality:

The D1 is a significant departure in appearance from HEDD’s AMT models, which were large, visually unmistakable constructions built around the physical demands of the AMT driver geometry. The D1 is comparatively compact and conventional-looking, built primarily from high-quality polymers across the cups, headband frame, yokes, and sliders, with a matte black finish and a four-slot metal grille at the back of each cup that nods to the aesthetic of HEDD’s AMT designs without reproducing them. The understated, all-black appearance reads as utilitarian and industrial rather than decorative, which suits a company with a studio monitor heritage far better than any attempt at lifestyle-product styling would.

At 350 grams without cable, the D1 is noticeably lighter than HEDD’s AMT models and sits in a weight range competitive with other open-back dynamic driver headphones at this price point. The headband uses a spring steel arc rather than a conventional notched slider mechanism, with the self-adjusting suspension distributing weight broadly across the top of the head rather than concentrating it at a single contact point.

Cup swivel is present in both axes and covers enough range to accommodate a wide variety of head shapes, though not quite enough to lay the cups fully flat in the DJ style. The overall build impression is of a headphone that will hold up to daily use without demanding excessive care, helped by the modular, fully serviceable design that lets individual components be replaced rather than requiring the whole unit to be retired when a pad or cable wears out.

The dual 3.5mm cable entry is worth noting in the context of third-party cable options. Both cups accept a 3.5mm plug independently, with internal wiring running across the headband to sum both channels, which is a practical system that avoids proprietary locking connectors and keeps replacement and upgrade cabling straightforward. The plugs seat securely and showed no looseness or intermittent contact during the review period. HEDD backs the D1 with a five-year warranty, one of the longest in the category at any price, which reflects the modular design’s intent to keep the headphone in service over a longer ownership period rather than treating it as a limited-life consumer product.

The TPCD driver itself is manufactured in Sweden by Composite Sound and assembled into the finished headphone at HEDD’s Berlin facility. Each unit is hand-assembled and individually tested before leaving the factory, which HEDD states as a standard part of production rather than a premium option, and the result on the review unit was a pair of drivers with matched channel levels and no audible driver mismatch at any frequency during testing. The perforated velour earpads are generous in both depth and internal diameter, accommodating larger ears without contact against the driver mesh, and contributing meaningfully to comfort during long sessions.

 

Fit, Comfort & Isolation:

The D1’s fit sits on the slightly snug side of neutral, with a clamping pressure that creates a secure seal around the ear without generating the kind of lateral pressure that causes temples or cheekbones to ache during extended sessions. The self-adjusting headband settles automatically on first wear and does not require manual positioning, though listeners accustomed to conventional notched headband systems may need a moment to trust that the spring steel arc will hold its position without slipping.

Perforated velour pads keep the area around the ear reasonably ventilated during longer sessions, which helps the D1 avoid the heat and moisture buildup that leather or pleather pads generate over time. At 350 grams and with the broad contact area of the spring steel headband, the D1 stayed comfortable through extended sessions without requiring repositioning. Drivability & Pairing:

At 32 ohms and 100dB sensitivity, the D1 is among the most easily driven headphones at its price point, and this is a deliberate part of HEDD’s positioning: where the AMT models demand dedicated amplification with real headroom, the D1 should be usable straight out of a laptop, phone, or basic dongle without compromise. In practice, that accessibility holds: the D1 reached comfortable listening levels from all three sources used for this review without any of them showing strain, and the main effect of a better source was a more dimensional, more organized presentation rather than a simple volume increase.

The iBasso D17 Atheris, a transportable DAC/amplifier built around HEDD’s own in-house discrete R2R and 1-bit PWM DAC architectures with dual Korg Nutube 6P1 tube amplification, was the most characterful of the three sources used here. The D17’s tube stage and R2R voicing added a degree of harmonic density and low-end warmth that played well against the D1’s own neutral-leaning tuning, filling in some of the analytical character the TPCD driver can carry with a more textured, rounded presentation. With 1200mW per channel from its 4.4mm balanced output, the D17 ran the D1 well below any meaningful power limit in either DAC mode, and the main choice between the two DAC architectures came down to whether a listener preferred the R2R mode’s added analog warmth or the 1-bit mode’s higher outright resolution.

The FiiO K17 was the most technically capable desktop source in the review chain, a full-size desktop DAC/amplifier built around dual AK4499EX DACs controlled by an AK4191 modulator, a fully discrete Class AB transistor amplification stage rated at 4000mW per channel balanced, a 31-band parametric EQ, and a 35W linear power supply. The K17’s AKM-based character is smooth and full-bodied rather than clinical, and the combination with the D1’s neutral tuning produced a presentation that was expansive, well-organized, and easy to listen to over long sessions. The K17’s parametric EQ also made it possible to explore how the D1’s response changes with subtle boosts in the upper midrange or treble, confirming that the headphone scales well with equalization without introducing driver distortion or compression under processing.

The iBasso DX340 in its standard amplifier module configuration was the most portable source of the three, used for mobile listening sessions and for confirming that the D1’s drivability claim holds outside a desktop environment. The DX340 drove the D1 without any audible power limitation in either gain setting, and the pairing’s character sat between the D17’s added warmth and the K17’s more expansive staging, offering a balanced, well-composed presentation well-suited to longer commutes or home listening away from the desktop.

The HEDDphone D1 has a broadly neutral, slightly dark tonal character that HEDD describes as reference-grade, and that description holds up under close listening: the D1 does not flatter any particular frequency region at the expense of another, and the TPCD driver’s structural resonance control produces a level of low-distortion clarity in the bass and midrange that most dynamic driver headphones in this price range cannot match. Where the D1 differs from a strictly measurement-neutral presentation is in its slight upper-treble rolloff, which gives the overall presentation a composed, fatigue-free quality rather than the hyped, forward energy that some listeners associate with detail-focused headphones.

Across all three sources, the D1’s character remained consistent: a headphone that prioritizes accuracy, natural timbre, and low coloration over emotional emphasis or tonal excitement. The D17 Atheris’s tube stage and R2R voicing added the most warmth and harmonic density to that baseline character, the FiiO K17 expanded it most noticeably in stage width and bottom-end weight, and the DX340 sat closest to what the D1 itself brings to the table without a source adding significant coloration of its own. None of the three pairings changed the D1’s fundamental identity; they adjusted its presentation within a consistent envelope rather than altering the headphone’s voice.

 

Bass:

Low-end extension through the D1 is deep and disciplined, reaching well into sub-bass territory without the lift or bloom in the midbass that many open-back dynamic driver headphones at this price use to create a sense of weight. The bass is linear rather than warm, carrying controlled impact on kick drums and a taut, well-defined quality on bass guitar lines that communicates note shape and pitch clearly rather than emphasizing physical sensation over accuracy. This is a bass that reads as accurate rather than exciting, and listeners expecting the kind of low-end presence a V-shaped or bass-forward tuning provides will find the D1 considerably more restrained.

Through the FiiO K17’s discrete Class AB output, which adds some low-end authority through its high-current delivery, the D1’s bass picked up a small but noticeable amount of additional perceived weight and fullness compared to the DX340 pairing, without ever becoming warm or rounded in character. The iBasso D17 Atheris’s R2R mode added the most low-end density of the three sources, a combination of the R2R architecture’s inherent analog texture and the Nutube stage’s added harmonic richness that brought the D1’s bass closest to the emotional weight of a warmer-tuned headphone while retaining the underlying accuracy.

The TPCD driver’s structural resonance control is most audible in the bass. Where a conventional polymer or mylar diaphragm can accumulate resonance during complex, layered low-frequency passages and produce a slight congestion or muddiness at the edges of bass notes, the D1’s carbon diaphragm maintains its shape under pressure, keeping individual bass notes identifiable and separated even during demanding material with dense low-frequency content. This is the practical application of HEDD’s eight years of diaphragm development, and in the bass it is a tangible technical advantage rather than a specification on paper.

 

Midrange:

The midrange is the D1’s clearest strength and the region where the TPCD driver’s combination of light mass and high stiffness produces the most immediately impressive results. Vocals across both male and female registers are rendered with a natural, uncolored timbre that avoids both the chestiness that some dynamic driver headphones introduce in the lower midrange and the forward, slightly nasal quality that compressed or less controlled diaphragms can add to vocal consonants. Male vocals carry believable chest weight without sounding artificially full, and female vocals stay clear and present without the upper-midrange push that can make them sound artificially bright or energetic.

Instrument timbre in the midrange is where the D1’s studio monitor heritage is most audible: acoustic guitar, piano, and string instruments are reproduced with a realistic, unidealized character rather than with the added warmth or sweetness that some audiophile-tuned headphones apply to make these instruments more immediately flattering. This is the kind of midrange that rewards close, critical listening and reveals more about the recording itself rather than adding a pleasing layer of coloration on top of it. Listeners specifically chasing warmth or emotional richness in the midrange may find the D1 somewhat cool and analytical in character; listeners who want an honest representation of the source material will find it one of the more convincing midrange presentations available at this price.

Layering and instrument separation across a complex midrange are handled with a composure that goes beyond what most single dynamic driver designs manage in this price bracket. Individual instruments in a dense mix retain their spatial positions and timbral identities rather than blending into a single textured wall, and fine detail in the space between instruments, reverb tails, breath noise, string resonance, is resolved clearly without being hyped into prominence. The D17 Atheris’s tube stage added the most midrange body and vocal warmth to this picture, making the D1’s naturally analytical midrange more emotionally engaging on acoustic and vocal-heavy material without compromising the underlying resolution.

 

Treble:

Treble through the D1 extends confidently to roughly 10kHz before beginning a gradual rolloff that keeps the top end from becoming forward or fatiguing over long sessions. Up to that point, cymbal decay, hi-hat transients, and the upper harmonics of strings and piano are rendered with a sense of natural decay and air rather than the more direct, sometimes clinical character that a flatter or brighter top end can produce. The rolloff beyond 10kHz is clearly audible in direct comparison with headphones that carry more upper-treble energy, and listeners who specifically prize outright air and sparkle in the very top octave will notice the D1 pulling back in that region.

The practical effect of this treble character is a headphone that is consistently easy to listen to over extended sessions across a wide range of source material, including recordings that are brightly mastered or that carry significant upper-register energy of their own. None of the three sources used for this review produced sibilance or listener fatigue through the D1 on material that is known to expose those tendencies in less controlled headphones. The FiiO K17’s AKM-based output added the smoothest and most extended-feeling top end of the three sources, while the D17 Atheris’s R2R mode added a fractional softness to the upper registers that suited acoustic and vocal material particularly well.

Detail retrieval in the treble is strong in absolute terms even with the rolloff factored in, because the absence of upper-treble emphasis does not mean an absence of information. Fine textural detail in cymbal decay and string harmonics is present and clearly readable rather than being masked or softened, it simply arrives without the foregrounded, spotlit quality that a brighter tuning would produce. This distinction, between having the information and emphasizing the information, is the key to the D1’s ability to deliver long-session usability without sacrificing the kind of detail that makes close, critical listening rewarding.

 

Soundstage and Imaging:

Soundstage width on the D1 is good without being exceptional, producing a presentation that places instruments clearly outside the head without reaching the expansive, panoramic width of headphones specifically tuned for staging performance. Depth is a stronger suit: front-to-back layering is handled with a precision and stability that keeps background instruments at a believable distance from a lead vocal or solo instrument, giving the presentation a sense of three-dimensional space rather than a flat, side-only image. This combination of moderate width and strong depth is consistent with a studio-monitor-heritage tuning philosophy, where accurate spatial representation matters more than flattering exaggeration of stage size.

Imaging precision is among the strongest technical qualities the D1 brings to the table. Instrument positions are stable and clearly defined within the stereo field, with center image density and vocal placement that stays anchored rather than shifting under pressure during busier passages. The TPCD driver’s low distortion and structural resonance control contribute directly to this: accurate timing information between the left and right channels is easier to preserve when the diaphragm itself is not introducing its own resonances on top of the signal, and the D1’s imaging precision reflects that at a listening level that is immediately audible.

Of the three sources used for this review, the FiiO K17 produced the widest and most expansive staging on the D1, helped by the linear power supply and discrete Class AB amplification providing consistent voltage swing across the full dynamic range of demanding recordings. The D17 Atheris produced the most holographic and three-dimensional presentation in its R2R mode, adding depth and instrument separation on complex passages that complemented the D1’s own imaging strengths. The DX340 sat between the two, producing a well-organized, coherent stage that did not reach quite the same spatial scale as the dedicated desktop units but was fully satisfying for extended portable listening.

 

Comparisons:

HEDD Audio HEDDphone D1 vs. Grell Audio OAE2:

The Grell Audio OAE2 and the HEDDphone D1 share a price bracket and an open-back, single dynamic driver design but approach the listening experience from completely different engineering philosophies. The OAE2’s 40mm driver is angled toward the front of the earcup rather than firing straight into the ear canal, a front-facing geometry built around Grell’s FSFM concept of recreating the spatial impression of loudspeakers in a room, while the D1’s 50mm TPCD driver fires conventionally with the emphasis on diaphragm material properties rather than acoustic geometry.

In the bass, the two headphones are more different in character than in quantity. The D1’s TPCD driver produces a tighter, more analytically controlled low end with less perceived mid-bass warmth, while the OAE2’s dynamic driver carries a fuller, rounder midbass that gives the low end more physical weight and presence at the cost of some of the D1’s transient precision. For listeners chasing outright bass accuracy and note-to-note separation, the D1 pulls ahead; for listeners who want their bass to carry more emotional presence and body, the OAE2 is the more naturally satisfying pairing.

The midrange comparison leans clearly toward the D1 in terms of outright resolution, timbral accuracy, and detail retrieval. The OAE2’s midrange is warm and smooth, suited to extended listening and forgiving of bright source chains, while the D1’s uncolored, analytical midrange is more demanding of the recording quality but more revealing of what is actually in the source material. Female vocals in particular carry more clarity and presence through the D1, with less of the slight mellowness the OAE2 introduces in the upper midrange region.

Treble tells a similar story, with the D1 extending further and more accurately in the 5 to 10kHz region than the OAE2, though both headphones roll off in the upper treble rather than maintaining a fully extended response. Neither is a fatiguing listen, but the D1 retrieves more fine detail in cymbal decay and string harmonics at normal listening levels, while the OAE2 compensates with a lower-treble presence peak that creates a wider perceived stage and more apparent air without the same level of actual detail resolution.

Soundstage is the most meaningful reversal of the comparison. The OAE2’s front-facing driver geometry produces a wider, more externalized image with a believable sense of instruments positioned in front of the listener rather than beside or inside the head, while the D1’s staging, while organized and depth-layered, is more conventional in its left-right placement and does not attempt the same speaker-like externalization. Listeners specifically drawn to that front-projected, spatially distinctive presentation will prefer the OAE2 for staging regardless of where the D1 pulls ahead technically; listeners who prioritize tonal accuracy, resolution, and timbral realism will find the D1 the more convincing all-round headphone at the same price.

The iBasso SR3 is a harder drive than the D1, built around a 150-ohm dynamic driver combining a Tesla magnetic circuit, a bio-cellulose diaphragm, and a liquid silicone surround rather than the TPCD approach, and priced at a similar level. The SR3 is warmer and more relaxed in its overall tuning than the D1, with a fuller, mid-bass-forward low end, a forward, intimate midrange particularly well-suited to vocal material, and a treble that prioritizes smoothness over outright extension. The character gap between the two headphones is wider than their shared driver type and similar price might suggest.

In the bass, the SR3 delivers more midbass warmth and a fuller, more physically present low end than the D1, with a quality that reads as more visceral and impactful for electronic and bass-heavy material. The D1’s TPCD bass is more controlled and more accurately linear from the midbass down, but it does not carry the SR3’s sense of low-frequency weight and punch. Listeners who want bass that is felt as well as heard will generally prefer the SR3’s low end over the D1’s more forensic presentation in this region.

The midrange is where the gap between the two headphones is most characterful. The SR3’s bio-cellulose diaphragm produces a forward, intimate, and natural-sounding vocal presentation that many listeners find immediately engaging, with male vocals in particular carrying a warmth and presence that the D1’s more analytical midrange does not replicate. The D1’s midrange is technically more resolving and more accurate in absolute timbral terms, communicating fine nuance in instrument timbre and recording quality that the SR3’s warmer character partially obscures, but the SR3’s midrange has an emotional immediacy that the D1’s more even-handed approach does not attempt to match.

Treble is another meaningful point of separation. The SR3 already rolls off the top end fairly early, producing a smooth, dark, and fatigue-free treble that suits long listening sessions very well but misses some of the fine treble detail the D1 delivers at the same listening level.
