The Sound:
The HiBy R1 is a surprisingly good sounding entry-level digital audio player (DAP) that provides a mature and balanced sound signature. It shines in the midrange, offering clear and detailed vocals and instruments. The bass is tight and controlled, while the treble remains smooth and refined. The spacious soundstage and fairly precise imaging significantly enhance the overall listening experience. For those in search of a budget-friendly DAP that delivers impressive audio performance, the HiBy R1 is a highly recommended option, especially when paired with IEMs like the HiBy Project ACE.
Let’s explore its sonic performance across different frequencies.
The HiBy R1 review has been written after a burn-in period of approximately 90 hours. My sound impressions below are mainly based on the R1 paired with IEMs like the HiBy Project ACE, HiBy Beans and the HiBy Yves. No MSEB settings were activated.
HiBy R1: A Budget-Friendly DAP with a Surprisingly Mature Sound
Bass:
The HiBy R1’s bass performance is commendable for its price range, delivering a tight and controlled low-end response. The sub-bass frequencies are well-extended, providing a solid foundation for genres like electronic and hip-hop, while maintaining a clean and precise decay. Tracks like Daft Punk’s “Doin’ it Right” and Lorde’s “Royals” showcase the R1’s ability to handle deep sub-bass with clarity. The mid-bass is dynamic and lively, adding punch and energy to the music. This region is well-defined, allowing for clear distinction between different bass notes and instruments. Pairing the R1 with IEMs like the HiBy Project ACE enhances its bass capabilities, making the low-frequency response even more engaging. The meticulous bass layering ensures that different low-frequency elements are distinct, which is crucial for complex arrangements in genres like orchestral and progressive rock. While the R1’s bass may not match the depth and impact of higher-end DAPs, it remains impressive for an entry-level device.
Midrange:
The midrange of the HiBy R1 excels, particularly with its slight warmth that adds richness and fullness to the sound. This warmth is evident in the lower midrange, enriching male vocals and acoustic instruments such as guitars and cellos. Listening to tracks like David Bowie’s “Heroes” or Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” the R1 presents male vocals with a full-bodied presence that enhances their emotional impact. Pairing it with the HiBy Beans, which has a more neutral character and is included with the Set Version, enhances the midrange performance, bringing out subtle nuances and textures in the music, making the listening experience even more compelling. However, the HiBy Project ACE takes the R1 to another level, offering a richer and more musical presentation with a better sense of resolution, thus elevating the overall midrange experience. The upper midrange remains smooth and refined, avoiding harshness or sibilance. Female vocals and lead instruments like violins and pianos are rendered with clarity and detail, making them sound natural and expressive. This balance ensures that the R1 handles a wide range of musical styles with finesse.
Treble:
The treble on the HiBy R1 is extended and airy, contributing to an overall sense of openness in the sound. High-frequency instruments such as cymbals, flutes, and synths are rendered with clarity and precision, ensuring they cut through the mix without harshness. The treble extension ensures that these instruments maintain their brilliance and presence without becoming fatiguing. However, some listeners may find the treble slightly lacking in sparkle and airiness compared to more dynamic DAPs. Despite this, the R1 manages to handle complex musical passages smoothly, making it suitable for long listening sessions. The balance between detail and smoothness in the treble range enhances the overall listening experience. Pairing it with the HiBy Project ACE adds a touch of sparkle and brilliance to the treble performance, making it more enjoyable.
Soundstage & Imaging:
The HiBy R1 offers an impressive soundstage for its price range, creating a sense of width and depth that enhances the spatial quality of the audio. Instruments and vocals are well-separated, providing a clear and defined positioning within the mix. This spatial awareness makes the listening experience more immersive, although it may not match the expansiveness of higher-end models. Imaging is precise, allowing for accurate localization of sounds, which is beneficial in complex tracks with multiple elements. Overall, the R1 provides a satisfying and immersive soundstage and imaging experience, enhancing the enjoyment of a wide range of musical genres.
Conclusion:
The HiBy R1 is a commendable entry-level digital audio player (DAP) that offers a well-rounded audio performance. The HiFi CS43131 DAC and integrated amplifier deliver clear and detailed sound, while its efficient design supports extended battery life. The X1600E master control ensures smooth operation and energy efficiency, enhancing the overall user experience.
Its compact, lightweight design and clear touchscreen interface make the R1 both practical and stylish. The intuitive HiByOS simplifies navigation, and versatile connectivity options, including USB DAC support and Bluetooth 5.1 with high-resolution codecs like LDAC and aptX, add to its versatility. Delivering a balanced sound signature with tight bass, detailed midrange, smooth treble, and a spacious soundstage, the HiBy R1 stands out as a strong choice for those seeking a budget-friendly DAP with solid performance. Pairing it with IEMs like the HiBy Project ACE enhances the listening experience, making it a worthwhile option for audio enthusiasts.
