Every Vortex is handcrafted in Istanbul and built to order. The shells are formed from medical-grade acrylic, giving them a dense, solid feel free from the hollow resonance sometimes encountered in lighter resin housings. The body itself is finished in solid black with a smooth, slightly glossy surface. Mounted on top is a monochrome swirl faceplate executed in black and white marble-like patterns, carrying a polished chrome Virtus Audio logo that sits proud of the surface. Critically, no two pairs share an identical faceplate pattern; the swirl is unique to each unit, giving every Vortex a distinct visual identity. Under directional light the faceplate reveals fluid, organic movement in the resin, while the chrome logo catches highlights cleanly against the darker swirls.

The faceplates sit flush with the acrylic body, presenting clean continuous surfaces with no visible gaps or uneven adhesive lines. Looking closely at the outer face, the swirl pattern flows across the entire plate and frames the logo naturally.

On the inner side, the shells are contoured for average ear anatomy, with a compact nozzle of moderate length and diameter that accepts a wide range of third-party tips. There is also a discreet ‘VORTEX’ lettering here.

A small metal mesh wax guard protects the bore.

Internally, signal integrity is supported by SPC (silver-plated copper) Litz wiring principles consistent with the brand’s approach to the product’s internal cabling. The cable feels supple yet durable, with well-finished connectors and a practical chin slider. While it is not modular, its build quality and handling characteristics are above average for the price and pair well with the overall boutique presentation of the Vortex. However, its dual-dynamic co-axial architecture and the substantial air-moving capability of the 10 mm LCP driver respond clearly to source quality, current delivery, and tonal character. The high-precision 2-way crossover with impedance-matching optimisation helps keep the frequency response consistent across a range of output impedances, yet the overall presentation still scales with better amplification and cleaner signal paths.

The primary sources used for this evaluation were the FiiO M33 R2R, the iBasso DX260 MK2, and the iBasso D17 Atheris. Each pairing revealed distinct facets of the Vortex’s character.

Paired with the FiiO M33 R2R, the Vortex leans into its warmest and most organic presentation. The R2R DAC’s inherent tonal density and slightly rounded transients complement the LCP driver’s natural note weight. Bass gains additional body and a sense of physical saturation without becoming loose; midrange timbre becomes richer and more intimate; the DLC treble softens slightly and integrates even more seamlessly. This combination is particularly effective with acoustic, jazz, vocal, and classic rock material, where the emphasis on musical flow and harmonic richness outweighs the need for clinical edge. The M33’s balanced output provides enough current to keep the low end controlled even on demanding tracks.

The iBasso DX260 MK2 shifts the balance toward greater resolution and spatial precision. It is neither a strictly dry, flat monitor intended for mixing studios, nor is it a heavily scooped, V-shaped “party-tuned” IEM that sacrifices the midrange for visual contrast. Instead, it aims for a cohesive, organic, and holistic sound signature that effortlessly accommodates diverse genres, from dense orchestral arrangements to minimalist acoustic tracks. The co-axial architecture is fundamental to this coherence; by eliminating the phase alignment issues common in split-driver configurations, every frequency band originates from a single acoustic point and arrives at the ear canal as a unified wavefront.

The 10 mm Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) diaphragm handles both the sub-bass and mid-bass regions, serving as the physical and structural foundation of the Vortex’s character. Paired with warmer, tube-like sources, the low-end gains an inviting density ideal for acoustic jazz and vocal-driven tracks. Conversely, plugging into neutral, solid-state gear tightens the transient response and sharpens the bass decay while fully preserving its physical slam. Overall, the low end is engaging, authoritative, and expertly integrated.

 

Midrange:

The midrange benefits immensely from both the co-axial alignment and the LCP diaphragm’s natural, organic timbre. By sharing the acoustic axis with the tweeter, the midrange achieves a seamless continuity that mimics full-range single dynamic driver designs. It occupies a natural, slightly warm position within the soundstage, carrying gratifying note weight and emotional resonance.

Vocals of all ranges sit in a beautifully balanced plane, being neither aggressively pushed into the listener’s face nor recessed behind the rhythm section. Male vocals benefit from rich lower-midrange chest resonance, giving deep baritones a grounded, lifelike presence. High-frequency regions are handled by the 6 mm Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) tweeter, strategically placed at the exact acoustic center of the main LCP driver. The extreme stiffness and light weight of the DLC material allow it to retrieve subtle micro-details, upper-harmonic air, and fast transients with crisp energy, all while keeping harshness strictly under control.

Extension is well-executed, providing an airy headstage and high-resolution ambiance without turning bright, peaky, or fatiguing during extended listening sessions. However, a mild elevation around the presence region (upper midrange/lower treble) can become slightly more evident when paired with pure silver cables or exceptionally bright, aggressive DAC/amps. Furthermore, listeners who are sensitive to peaks around the 8 kHz region may register occasional sharpness on poorly mastered or sibilant tracks.
